Wetness, mud, and dirt. To avoid bringing these unwelcome companions into their homes, many tenants leave their shoes outside their front doors. But is this actually allowed? talyo. Property Services, a nationwide property management company, explains what applies in German apartment buildings.
In an apartment building, the stairwell is generally considered a common area and is therefore subject to the house rules. Whether shoes are allowed to be left outside the door depends on the respective house rules or an agreement with the landlord.
“In many cases, one or two pairs of neatly stored shoes are tolerated as long as they do not obstruct anyone or pose a potential hazard,” explains Anja Nolte, Team Leader Property Management at talyo. Property Services GmbH.
“The situation is different if several shoes or even entire shoe racks block the escape route – in this case, the landlord or property management company can order them to be removed. “ The regulations are particularly strict when it comes to fire safety. Open corridors must remain freely accessible as escape routes at all times. ”We recommend that all tenants familiarize themselves with their house rules or, if in doubt, check directly with the property management company,” says Nolte.
